about Afya Shea
We are passionate about skincare and friendship. The founders are truly friends and have traveled across the African continent extensively. We have the strongest of ties in Ghana, Liberia and Kenya. We grew up using shea butter but did not know it as that name.
In some areas of West Africa, shea butter is called “donut grease”. We don’t know why it is called that but that is a persistent euphemism today. What we do know and still holds true is that it is the most moisturizing skin product.
We grew up to work in different fields to include banking , education and healthcare. We connected over the love of great skincare. We hope to share this love with you through our products.

Jerine and Nehkonti are childhood friends and Tabi came on the scene in 2021. Jerine and Nehkonti are from Liberia and Tabi is from Kenya. Jerine had been making shea butter sourced from Ghana for her family and friends for several years. Tabi was gifted a jar of shea butter and fell in love with it. After Nehkonti tried it and agreed, we knew there was something special here. The shea butter was smooth and smelled heavenly.
We decided to work together to scale up and make it available beyond just family and friends. Afya Shea was launched. Afya is the swahili word for health. We selected this name based on the many properties of shea which include wound healing, nourishment and skin protectant.
The shea butter is sourced directly from Northern Ghana and can be available in its raw form or formulated with natural essential oils. Afya Shea is not only women owned but also veteran owned.
